Ravens Wood School
Art & design
Great news! 2017 A level results for Art, Graphic Design and Photography, are at an all-time high - well done to students and staff for all their hard work!
KS5 StudyExpertise and experience
The staff in the Art & Design department have been employed specifically to provide you with a range of expertise and experience. Our team have worked in a variety of different industries, including graphic design, journalism and jewelry design, and have all worked in secondary school art departments for a number of years.
Although you will have a lead teacher in your subject area, you are welcome to call on the knowledge of any member of staff within the department.
At AS, you will be completing the first stage of an AQA GCE qualification.
What will we expect from you?
It is important that at the beginning of this school year, you take some time to reflect on your progress and achievement at GCSE level and what this means for you at AS.
What will we expect from you?
What can you expect from us?
Our role is to help you develop as a practising artist. This does not mean telling you precisely what to do! We are failing to prepare you for your future endeavours if we do this. Instead we offer you regular tutorials, written and verbal feedback, group crits and gallery visits to assist your progress. We are available at lunch and after school for individual help outside of the classroom.
We will provide feedback to your parents at regular intervals and will contact them at an early stage if we have concerns about your progress. This is so we can support you as a team.

What will we expect from you?
- You must have a passion for a chosen subject area. Extend your skills and knowledge beyond your set assignments; you will be the one to benefit in the long term. Our expectations of your commitment to study will be high. For you to succeed at this level, we require:
- Excellent attendance and punctuality
- A pro-active attitude to study. This means asking for help and guidance when you need it, and acting independently on the advice given to you
- A minimum of 5 hours homework each week
- 100% punctuality on deadlines. We cannot plan sufficiently for our classes if only some people bring the required work along: be fair to yourself, your teachers and your fellow classmates if you wish to reap the benefits.
- A genuine interest in the subject. The best students at AS are the ones who are passionate about learning within

GCSE Art & Design follows on from the KS3 National Curriculum order for Art. The course is broad and research based. The specification emphasises the new subject criteria for Art. This requires the development of practical skills and creativity to be sustained by the study of Art and its contents. Investigating and making are linked to knowledge and understanding

Key Stage 3 study
Monitoring and evaluating our students’ progress is one of the keys to our success and we set challenging but realistic targets for our pupils throughout their school career. Your son will engage in a wide variety of art mediums and genres - ceramics, textiles, fine art, photography, graphic design and art history are all in the curriculum at key stage 3.
Years 7 & 8 (Key Stage 3)
In July of Year 6, we meet parents and carers with their sons. Here we agree a common ethos; the 3 Ls. These are: to be a Learner, a Leader and a (Lady or) Gentleman of Ravens Wood. The curriculum allows us to develop all three Ls. At the beginning of Year 7 there is an induction period during the first six weeks. We believe that the most efficient and fairest way of grouping pupils is setting by ability, using nationally generated data alongside our own assessments of general intelligence and baseline tests in core subjects to ensure that students have been placed in the appropriate set. These tests also contribute to an indication of future performance up to GCSE level and allow us to track progress from the start. We operate a flexible system with regard to setting and use the review system to make set adjustments at the beginning and middle of each academic year. Key Stage 3 is the launchpad for excellence in Key Stage 4.
